Couples Photoshoot in NYC

What is a couple’s photoshoot?

Simply put, it can be an engagement shoot or just a fun love story, documenting your relationship with each other and the city.

Your shoot can be of a classic style (think Central Park or by the Brooklyn Bridge), or we can go quite modern, such as setting the shoot in High Line Park or in Vessel at Hudson Yard.

First I’ll ask you about your relationship and your thoughts about NYC (what draws you to it). We’ll set a time and place for the photo shoot and discuss what you’re planning to wear.
The shoot can be a fun 1 hour photo session, or a half-day or full-day outing with a team of makeup artists, hair stylists and fashion stylists (in fact, before I started performing couples photo shoots, I was involved with fashion photography which is what helped me to develop my strong sense of style and vision).

It’s interesting how film reveals elements of an event or moment which photography can’t.
A quick look here, a flash of a smile there; film captures it all – something especially powerful among NYC’s amazing architecture, where the smallest moments can take on deep romantic meaning.
And in addition to filming, before the shoot, I’ll take care of all the big preparations (learning about the couple, finding the best location to document the relationship, etc.)

NYC Couples Photography

I love capturing love stories.

But the artistry isn’t in the couple’s poses, it’s in capturing the true emotions.  One way I do this is in my preparation before the photoshoot where I look over photos of the couple and put together a mood board (a visual collage of images designed to offer the couple a visual reference guide before the shoot begins).

Best Time For A Couple Photoshoot in NYC

New York’s a pretty crowded place, so I prefer performing the photoshoot in the quieter times of the day – my favorite times are usually during the week before 10 am or around sunset.

Best Places For An Engagement Photoshoot In New York

NYC’s a photographer’s dream, providing plenty of amazing backgrounds for whichever season your shoot takes place.

Right now, the top 3 locations to do an engagement photoshoot are:

1. Central Park – The most popular spot for an engagement and couples photoshoot in NYC, with the area in highest demand being the park’s Bow Bridge and Bethesda Terrace.

2. Dumbo, Brooklyn – Near Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge, this second most popular area for NYC Central Park photographers boasts a very industrial background and outstanding views of both the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge as well as downtown Manhattan.

3. The High Line Park – This very popular photoshoot spot is quite modern compared to the other two locations. But a tricky thing about High Line is just  how crowded it can get, so I’d definitely recommend setting the shoot in the early morning hours, and not during the weekend.

On top of the big three, other great NY locations include Soho, the South Street Seaport area, Grand Central, certain coffee shops, restaurants and private rooftops.

What about Times Square, the Empire State Building, or Top of The Rock?

These are definitely some of NYC’s most famous and exciting locations. But their fame also makes them the busiest. So if you’re set on one of these spots, just be prepared to have a whole bunch of strangers around you and in your shoot.

Couple Photography Packages NYC

I currently offer 2 types of couples photoshoots:

1. A simple 1 hour photography session, set in one location

2. A whole day shoot – this involves multiple locations, make-up artists, both a hair and fashion stylist, and the couple changing outfits multiple times.

What should we wear for the photoshoot?

Well, we’re all different, so there’s no single answer to this question. But I think the key is to wear something which best defines you and your relationship.  For some it’s classic dresses and costumes, for others it could be as basic as jeans and a t-shirt.

And even if you’re not sure what look is going to work best for, you can always take advantage of this life hack I learned from my previous career as a fashion photographer.  Just go to almost any store like Bloomingdales, Macys or any single brand store, try some outfits out, buy what you like and simply return it after the photoshoot – just be sure to keep the receipts and read the return policies!
